During 1820 to 1824 nearly four expeditions took place in Canberra. Settlement of the European whites started in the year 1826 when Joshua John Moore brought a site in the area and named it Canberra. During the 19th century people from the European countries settled here started growing steadily in numbers. Canberra history saw significant events during the late 19th century when the dispute started around Sydney and Melbourne as which one should be given the status of the national capital.
As a compromise to the situation Canberra was selected as the capital city in 1908, however it was only on 12 march 1913 that the city received its official name given by the wife of the governor general. The day of 9 May 1927 holds major importance in Canberra history when the federal government decided to open the Provisional Parliament in Canberra. Finally in the year 9 May 1988 the city saw the permanent Parliament House. Since then Canberra has been going through many developments and has emerged as one of the major tourist destinations in Australia.
